Cycle4Sam 5 announced for week before Easter 2014

Thursday 19 December 2013

Cycle4Sam 5, in memory of the late Sam Roberts, will take place in the week before Easter 2014, April 12-19, it was today announced.

The respected biennial charity event, which has attracted generous support since starting in 2006, aims to raise $75,000 for children’s palliative care in South Australia.

Cycle4Sam director Marty Roberts said that Cycle4Sam was crucial to funding therapy services for the families of children with incurable and rare medical conditions at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

Cycle4Sam funds art therapy for family members and a new Dad’s bereavement program, among other targeted supports for families.

A record number of riders will take part in Cycle4Sam 5, covering 1000km from Renmark to Adelaide, via the Fleurieu Peninsula, from April 12 to April 19, 2014 [NEWS EDITORS PLEASE NOTE].

Planning was underway for the more than 25 experienced road cyclists to safely ride in a group over seven days.

Cycle4Sam was in memory of four-year-old Sam Roberts, who passed away from a rare genetic disease in 2005. Sam inspired all who knew him and remains the inspiration behind Cycle4Sam, which was run by his parents Marty and Michelle Roberts every two years. In that time more than $420,000 has been generously donated by the people and businesses of the state.

“Cycle4Sam 5 will raise much-need funds for these families at their time of need,” Marty said.

Marty and Michelle this year were recognised with a Pride of Australia medal in the “Care and Compassion” category for South Australia.

The event has become a mainstay in supporting certain targeted services for the approximately 50 families who face a rare, life-limiting diagnosis of a child each year in South Australia.

“With the assistance of the public and business donors, these services will continue to be provided,” said Marty.

“We do this for Sam and for all children like him, who fight hard and inspire others while facing the most challenging of circumstances,” said Marty.

Cycle4Sam 5 is seeking corporate and individual sponsors as it gears-up to achieve its aim of $75,000.
