Harris donation puts Cycle4Sam in the pink

The Adelaide Hills will be tickled pink this Sunday as cyclists don jerseys donated by Phil Harris’ not-for-profit foundation while training for Cycle4Sam, which starts September 24.

The Harris Foundation has donated the distinctive jerseys in trademark bright pink to the fourth biennial Cycle4Sam memorial ride as part of its sponsorship arrangement. Cycle4Sam is aiming to raise $60,000 for sick children in South Australia .

With only two weekends left before the 1030km Cycle4Sam starts from the Flinders Ranges, on Sunday riders will cycle from Magill to Hahndorf and back – a distance of approximately 100km.

Cycle4Sam is in memory of Sam Roberts, an inspirational young boy who passed away in 2005 from a rare and incurable genetic disease.

Sam’s dad and Cycle4Sam director Marty Roberts said he was used to wearing colourful cycling Lycra – but never in bright pink.

“It’s an interesting look, but hopefully it’ll help draw some attention and raise awareness for the cause,” Marty said.

“We’ll be riding from Magill to Hahndorf and back in the pink tops on Sunday, so our team’s got over 100km to get used to new look.”

“We would like to thank the Harris Foundation. These tops should do exactly what we want, which is raise attention, awareness and hopefully money to help children who are facing some truly challenging circumstances,” he said.

The 15 riders along with corporate sponsors including Harris Foundation are aiming to raise $60,000 to fund art therapy services, a therapy room in the Women’s and Children’s Hospital and partly fund a respite holiday home in Adelaide for children with life-limiting diseases.

Launched in 2006, the biennial ride has raised $300,000 for the Paediatric Palliative Care Unit of the Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

Cycle4Sam is seeking corporate and individual sponsors as it gears up to achieve its aim of $60,000.

Other sponsors of Cycle4Sam include: McInerney Barratt Financial Solutions, Visacuity Software Solutions, A & L Windows, Genesys Wealth Advisors, EBS Ecology, Wards Shoes of Norwood, Madderns Patent Attorneys, Badge Constructions, Rowe Partners and Bakers Delight.
